29 On June 30, 1933 , just a month before the end of his mandatory clerkship, Stein was dis- missed without notice. 5 The dismissal followed the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service passed on April 7, 1933, which allowed the recently installed National Social- ist regime to remove anyone deemed politi- cally or racially undesirable from the civil ser- vice or to bar their admission. On July 2, 1933, several local newspapers named Stein in their reports about the mass dismissals from the legal profession and from training for the bar (ill.14). 6 As a consequence, he was also barred from accessing the archives of the Dresden statutory health insurance fund, the holdings of which were crucial to the research for his doctoral thesis. Moreover, he was not allowed to take his Second State Examination and thus was unable to establish himself as a fully qualified lawyer. 8 For the next three months, Stein worked as a law consultant for the Yramos tobacco and cigarette factory owned by the Jewish Lewin family. 7 One day, the son of the owner, Alfred Lewin, came to warn him that a friend who also worked at the plant had been arrested by the Gestapo. This, combined with the impend- ing mass trial against members of the SAP, brought home with pressing urgency the need to leave Dresden and Germany. Oktober 1933 Paris. Under the pretext of going on their honeymoon trip, the young couple hastily left for France. As Stein later wrote in a letter to friends and relatives, the sea of swastikas they saw on their last day in Germany eased the pain of having to leave home. 9 After a stopover in the Saarland, where they were put up by relatives of Stein, they reached Paris on October 7, 1933 . 15 Fred und Lilo, o.J.
