Die Straßenschluchten von New York, Schau- fenster, Menschen bei der Arbeit und während der Freizeit, Kinder und Demonstrationen und Paraden faszinierten den Fotografen. Starting a new life in New York was not easy. While Fred lobbied agencies and newspapers for commissions, Lilo worked in a factory, then as a seamstress and finally in an industrial photo lab, where she had to process forty photographs a minute. Still, they had escaped the threat of fascism and the Nazis and had much to be grateful for. The openness and friendliness of New York thrilled them and made it easier to put down new roots. Inspired by the city, Fred explored its streets and sights, camera at the ready. He was endlessly fascinated by its streets lined with soaring buildings, its shop-window displays, people at work and play, children, demonstrations and parades.
