In New York, Stein could have made his origi- nal dream of becoming a lawyer come true—a path that had not been open to him in Paris— but he felt that going back to law school and pursuing another career change were not a viable option. From the moment he set foot on American soil, irrespective of his lowly refugee status, the US authorities had granted him permission to work as a photographer. Stein was mesmerized by the new photographic universe that New York had to offer. He studied the work of other photographers, went to exhibitions and read art books, but he was not swayed by formalistic or aesthetic trends. He had long ago found his own style and contin- ued to capture the city and its inhabitants in images of great precision and atmospheric density. Not hired full time with any company, he was free to work as he saw fit and refused to follow dictates as to the form or content of his images.
