6 Acknowledgements This book is the result of the conference Collections, Displays & the Agency of Objects organ- ized in September 2017 as part of the research project Parerga and Paratexts—How Things Enter Language. Practices and Forms of Presentation in Goethe’s Collections, and in collaboration with the Department of History of Art in Cambridge. The event and the publication of its proceedings were made possible by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Edu- cation and Research, and the hospitality offered by St John’s College, Cambridge. We would like to express our gratitude to both institutions for their very generous support. We also wish to thank a number of people who put their expertise at the service of this intellectual undertaking and provided invaluable assistance in its realization: Silke Becker, Christina Faraday, Wolfgang Holler, Sylvia Plitt, Katherine Rickett (together with the Cambridge Union Society’s staff), Mira Claire Zadrozny and Hannah Uhlen. This vol- ume has also benefited from the kindness of DavidWard and Maureen Gallace, who gra- ciously granted us access to their work so that we could illustrate Ivan Gaskell’s article. Finally, RebeccaWhiteley read all the texts with great care and efficiency. We are extremely grateful for her valuable contribution.
