Ein ganz ähnliches Motiv hat Timothy O’Sullivan 1867 während des King Survey in der Carson Desert in Nevada aufgenommen (Abb. 69).427 Eine Ansicht des Garden of the Gods (Abb. 70), einer öffentlichen Parkanlage am Stadtrand von Colorado Springs, ist der Bilderzählung auf dem Frontispiz als eine Art Prolog vorangestellt. Es handelt sich um die einzige Nachtaufnahme des Buches.Weite Teile des Bildes sind schwarz.
