158 MYTHOLOGY AND RELIGION Alongside portraits, Rosalba Carriera devoted a significant proportion of her oeuvre to mythological, allegorical, and religious depictions. She is known for her many pastels and miniatures of Roman deities, but also allegorical visualisations of the seasons, four elements, continents, and virtues, often produced in many different versions, in part as cycles. She usually represented these themes in the form of large-scale, half-length female figures with their respective attributes – sometimes assembled altogether in a single composition. The Dresden collection still holds the pastels of the Four Elements as a complete cycle to this day, along with others devoted to individual virtues and muses.
